It’s Glastonbury this weekend and the festival season is well and truly upon us. So how can you keep hair looking great while avoiding the horrendous festival facilities?
• Day One – enjoy your clean hair! Make sure you wash it at the last possible moment before leaving for your chosen festival.
• Day Two – chances are there may the first signs of grease. If you want to avoid the lottery of festival showers, you can always use dry shampoo. Spray to the roots and massage in thoroughly.
• Day Three – the best thing to do from now on is to keep your hair out of your face. Try a simple ponytail or twist it into a bun and secure with grips. If the worst comes to the worst – wear a hat!
You may have thought that huge hairstyles were invented in the 1980s. However, if you want to see some real towering monstrosities, take a peek at some Georgian portraits.
You will notice that both men and women favoured white or very pale coloured hair. This was achieved with a mixture of starch or flour which was literally blown onto the hair by a pair of bellows.
To obtain the really big hair look, a veritable army of stylists were employed who created elaborate structures around wooden frames, often incorporating horsehair.
It was at this time that curling tongs were invented and first used. They comprised a pair of metal prongs with wooden handles. The prongs were heated in a fire and the hair was wrapped round them and allowed to cool and set.
If you’ve gone to the time, expense and trouble of getting the colour of your hair the exact shade you want it then you need to beware of these threats that could cause you problems:
1. Shampoo. The right shampoo is crucial for maintaining your hair colour. Avoid any shampoo containing sulphates as they can cause coloured hair to swell, promote colour leaching and even break down your hair’s natural protein. 2 in 1 shampoos containing silicones should also be avoided as they can leave a film deposit or oxidize blonde hair, turning it yellow.
